In the Thick of It: Louis’ Insider Look at Life as a student intern

How long were you at DTO, and what areas of responsibility did you cover?

In total, I spent three and a half years at DTO. During this time, I worked on various projects across different industries, such as automotive, machinery, and medical markets. This allowed me to gain diverse insights into various subject areas and workflows, as well as contribute to a range of tasks. A central focus of my work was supporting projects by evaluating a wide variety of sources and critically classifying expert opinions from in-depth interviews. This allowed me to continuously deepen my technical knowledge and develop a keen sense for summarizing complex information. My focus was always on presenting content clearly and for specific target groups, for example, through the presentation of analysis results, data evaluation, or the precise documentation and condensation of key interview statements.

What was the most exciting project you worked on at DTO?

Actually, all the projects were exciting in their own way because they each brought different insights and experiences. However, I would particularly highlight a project for an international automotive supplier focusing on connection systems for commercial vehicles. Here, I was not only able to deepen my understanding of complex technical products but also gain valuable insights into global market structures and industry-specific requirements. It was precisely the mix of methodological structure and new challenges that made the work particularly educational. Overall, I found participating in all projects to be exciting and enriching.

What skill are you taking away from your time with us that isn't taught at university?

An important skill I’m taking with me is professionalism in dealing with diverse people, especially within an international industrial environment. As a working student here, you get insights into projects with clients from different countries and industries, which quickly teaches you how to adapt to different stakeholders and communicate complex topics clearly. Especially as a young person, you gain office experiences that are hardly taught at university, particularly in dealing with clients, service providers, and colleagues. At DTO, this also means putting yourself in different perspectives and working together on solutions that support strategic decisions.

How did you experience the working atmosphere at DTO?

I experienced the working atmosphere as consistently collegial and pleasant. Interactions were open, respectful, and supportive, so I quickly felt like part of the team. Our intercultural diversity especially contributed to many different perspectives being brought to the table, which further shaped our teamwork in a positive way.

What advice do you have for the next working student taking your place?

My advice would be to settle in step-by-step, ask questions, and get involved proactively. Even smaller tasks should be carried out conscientiously and with commitment. This shows your dedication and often lays the foundation for being given more responsibility and more demanding tasks later on.
